Undergraduate Programs

Welcome to the College of Education where Providing Leadership for Positive Change in 21st Century Communities is our priority.Undergraduate programs in the College of Education are offered through three academic units: Special Education and Communication Disorders; Teacher Education; and the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. The college seeks to prepare undergraduate students for careers in a variety of fields including teaching, athletic training, educational interpreter, exercise science, public health, recreation and leisure, library science, and speech-language pathology.  Explore this web page further to gain an understanding of the programs offered by the College of Education.

 


Teaching Programs General Information »

  • Description: The College of Education offers endorsement programs at the elementary (K-6), middle grades (4-9) and secondary (7-12 or K-12).  Programs at each level are designed to prepare candidates to meet Nebraska requirements for teaching certificate.  A minimum of 120 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.75 are required to graduate from the College of Education.
  • Advising: Academic advisors are:  Stephanie McGowan (A-H); Amanda Micheli; (I – S); Cara Ortega; (T – Z).  Information on the website is provided for your convenience.  It does not replace meeting with an academic advisor.  Current College of Education students can schedule an academic advising appointment by using Starfish (address)
  • Field Experiences:   All endorsement candidates must meet the state licensure standard of a minimum of 100 hours of classroom experience prior to student teaching.  Field experiences are embedded in identified professional courses.
  • Student Teaching: The student teaching experience is an all-day all semester experience in a metropolitan area school.  Student teaching is the capstone experience.

The coursework for an elementary endorsement is divided into five areas:  General Education, Related Content Courses, Professional Core, Elementary professional, and Emphasis Area. Candidate must select an area of emphasis in one of the following areas.The areas of emphasis enhance the skills and marketability of the prospective teacher. 

Elementary Dual Endorsement Options »

Candidates may elect to complete a dual endorsement in elementary education and one of the following areas. Dual endorsements require two semesters of student teaching and result in two teaching endorsements on a NE teaching certificate.

Middle Grades Endorsement Options »

The coursework for a middle grades endorsement is divided into five areas:  General Education, Content Endorsement Areas, Professional Core, Middle Grades Professional requirements.  Candidates in the middle level program must complete two content course work areas.

Secondary Endorsement Options »

The coursework for a secondary endorsement is divided into four areas:  General Education, Endorsement Content, Professional Core, and Secondary Professional requirements. Secondary candidates must select one of the following endorsement areas.

Dual Endorsements in Secondary: »

Candidates may elect to complete a dual endorsement in a secondary content area and mild/moderate disabilities, deaf hard of hearing, or school library.  Dual endorsements require two semesters of student teaching and result in two teaching endorsements on a NE teaching certificate.

Supplemental Endorsements »

Supplemental endorsements are content areas which can be added to a NE teaching certificate in the presence of other earned endorsements. A supplemental endorsement cannot stand alone on an initial teaching certificate.

Non-Teaching Programs »

Description: The College of Education offers in athletic training, educational interpreter, exercise science, community health, library science, public health, speech language pathology, recreation and leisure students.    A minimum of 120 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50 are required to graduate from the College of Education.
