what is the clerk academy?

The Nebraska Master Municipal Clerk Academy is an annual continuing education professional seminar held in Nebraska during March of each year. It is held during the same week as the Nebraska Municipal Clerk Institute. The UNO School of of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is responsible for operating the Academy with the approval of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC).

The purpose of the Academy is to meet the professional needs of Nebraska Clerks who have already completed the Institute program and achieved the prestigious Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation. Designed for more experienced Clerks, the Academy program offers opportunities to exchange new information, question current knowledge, challenge personal beliefs and assumptions, inspire and motivate individual learners, and undertake to share wisdom, insights, and new professional perspectives.

The Academy presentations are geared toward improving current skills, updating information, and expanding personal and professional growth potential. Attendance provides credits towards recertification and/or the Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) designation.

Although the main purpose of the Academy is to provide professional continuing education, a number of other events are held during the week.

  • A Celebration of Clerks highlights the Area Associations with a colorful flag ceremony.
  • A Wednesday evening reception hosted by the NMCA, vendors and other sponsors provides an opportunity to get acquainted socially.
  • Vendors will have displays available on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • A silent auction of items donated (and often created) by the Institute and Academy participants and others is on Wednesday and Thursday and benefits the scholarship program.
  • An NMCA business meeting is held on Thursday.
  • The week ends with a special theme banquet, clerks' awards, a graduation ceremony and entertainment.

scholarships.

Scholarships are available for Clerks to receive financial assistance to attend the Academy. These scholarships have been made possible by a grant from the Department of Economic Development, donations to the NMCA Scholarship Fund, and proceeds from the Silent Auction which is held each year during the week of the Institute and Academy. As many scholarships as possible will be awarded until funds are exhausted. The scholarship covers only the tuition fee (or a part of it) and does not cover room, board or travel expenses.  Clerks must be a member of NMCA in order to be eligible for a scholarship. If you are not sure if you are a member you can check with the Secretary/Treasurer of the NMCA.

The Scholarship Application Form is posted on-line as soon as it is available in the fall.
