Search:  The Chemistry Department of the University of Nebraska at Omaha is seeking a tenure track Assistant Professor to start August 20, 2007. The university and department have a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from members of under-represented groups and strongly encourage women and persons of color to apply for this position.

Responsibilities:  The nine-month academic assignment will include teaching of organic chemistry, organic chemistry laboratories, and may include courses in the general introductory chemistry program, biochemistry, or medicinal chemistry depending on faculty interest. Research will comprise part of the work load. There is limited opportunity for summer teaching in general chemistry.

People:  Chemistry instructs over 1000 students each semester. The campus, located near the center of metropolitan Omaha and occupied since 1938, has offered student residential housing for 1200 since 1999. The department has twelve professorial faculty and five laboratory instructors. Full-time department staff includes an office manager and stockroom manager. An electronics technician is shared with the Physics Department. Student workers assist in grading and laboratory preparation.

Facilities:  The department occupies the top floor of a 1987 science building shared with physics, geography/geology, and mathematics. Modern instrumentation (e.g. 200 MHz NMR, GC/MS, ICP-MS, FT-IR, spectrofluorometer, and glove box) is readily available. Four HPLC and six ion chromatographs are used in freshman laboratories.  The department has its own Chemistry Education (computer) Center. A Math-Science Learning Center is being developed.

Community:  Chemistry faculty support programs in bioinformatics, biotechnology, and environmental science and collaborate in chemistry, education, engineering, materials science, medicine, pharmacy, and physics with faculty in the Omaha community and region. Some faculty travel to schools to present CAPOW (Chemistry and Physics on Wheels) demonstrations.

Application:  The position requires an earned doctorate in organic chemistry or a related field and a commitment to working in an undergraduate program at a metropolitan university.  To apply submit complete vita, a letter of application, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a research plan with equipment needs at http://careers.unomaha.edu.  Have transcripts and three letters of recommendation mailed to James Carroll, Univ. of Nebraska at Omaha, 6001 Dodge St, Omaha, NE 68182.  We anticipate selecting finalists in December.
