Chemistry B.S. with Concentration in Medicinal Chemistry
Four-Year/Eight Semester, 120-Credit Hour Program*

*Scheduled to allow completion of UNMC College of Pharmacy entrance requirements in three years.

A B.S. degree in chemistry with a concentration in medicinal chemistry requires course work in both chemistry and biology.

The required 38 credit hours of chemistry include: CHEM 1180, CHEM 1184, CHEM 1190, CHEM 1194, CHEM 2250, CHEM 2260, CHEM 2274, CHEM 2400, CHEM 2404, CHEM 2500, CHEM 3350, CHEM 3354, CHEM 3710, CHEM 4650, CHEM 4654, one additional lecture from CHEM 3210, CHEM 4230, CHEM 4240, or CHEM 4660 and one additional lab from CHEM 3424, CHEM 4664, or CHEM 4950.

The required nine credit hours of biology course work are BIOL 1450 and BIOL 2140.

Four additional credit hours must come from CHEM 3210, CHEM 3360 (CHEM 3364), CHEM 3414, CHEM 3424, CHEM 3514, CHEM 4230, CHEM 4240, CHEM 4400 (CHEM 4404), CHEM 4500, CHEM 4660 (CHEM 4664), CHEM 4670, CHEM 4810, CHEM 4930, CHEM 4950, CHEM 4960 or BIOL 3020, BIOL 3240, BIOL 3830, BIOL 4130, BIOL 4140, BIOL 4450, BIOL 4640, BIOL 4720 (BIOL 4730), BIOL 4850, BIOL 4960.

Required cognates are Calculus (MATH 1950, MATH 1960); and a year sequence of general physics with laboratories. Calculus III (MATH 1970) is recommended. To graduate with an ACS certified degree, one additional upper level chemistry lecture course and two additional upper level laboratory courses are required.

These courses can be applied to pre-professional curricula. For example, with care to the selection of electives and sequencing of requirements, pre-pharmacy students may meet UNMC College of Pharmacy entrance requirements in three years and still be able to complete a B.S. in chemistry with a concentration in medicinal chemistry in four years.

(1) Required or required elective of the UNO program and by UNMC College of Pharmacy (CoP) for admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy program as a pre-pharmacy student.
(2) Required or required elective in the UNO program, beyond minimal electives for pre-pharmacy.
(3) These fourteen scheduled credit hours of courses are required of pre-pharmacy students by CoP; none are directly applicable to the UNO B.S. program. Completion of all these and all UNO requirements listed totals 126 scheduled credit hours.
(4) Needs to fulfill cultural diversity requirements to maintain freedom of elective choice.
(5) One of these two courses needs to fulfill the second diversity requirement for UNO: e.g. Gerontology, Global, U.S. Cultural.
(6) If none of the 14 scheduled credit hours of CoP-required courses are taken, eight credit hours of electives are required to complete the 120-credit hour degree.
(7) This writing course for chemistry majors meets the 3-credit hour writing course requirement.

Additional Notes on UNMC College of Pharmacy (COP):
(8) CoP requires 4-scheduled credit hours of calculus. MATH 1950 and 1960 are both 5-credit hours (as are MATH 106 and 107 at UNL).
(9) CoP requires 8-scheduled credit hours of physics including laboratories. PHYS 1110, 1120, 2110, and 2120 are all four-credit hours without laboratories. UNL PHYS 211 and 212 are 4-scheduled credit hours without laboratory.
(10) CoP requires 4-scheduled credit hours of Biological Sciences with lab; BIOL 1450 is 5-scheduled credit hours with lab.
(11) CoP requires 3-scheduled credit hours of Genetics. BIOL 2140 is 4-scheduled credit hours with lab.
(12) CoP requires 2-scheduled credit hours of Biochemistry. CHEM 4650 requires lab for total of 4-scheduled credit hours.
