What is the PPST?
The PPST exam is a part of a group of tests known as the Praxis series.  The test measures skills in reading mathematics, and writing skills.  It is administered as a computer-based or pencil/paper exam. 

Why do I have to take it?
It is a required test in many states for people seeking teacher certification.

Why do I have to take it in order to pass this course?
The music education curriculum is very intensive requiring coursework in both the College of Education and the College of Fine Arts.  In order for you to complete the degree in a timely manner and in an appropriate sequence, it is imperative that you pass this exam during your freshman year.  Additionally, the new application procedures for the College of Education requires passing scores to enroll in EDUC 2010, EDUC 2510, and EDUC 2520.

When will I know if I have passed?
It takes approximately 2-3 weeks to receive all of your scores.  The raw score is converted to a scaled score.  The passing score for each portion of the PPST is as follows:

How can I prepare?
There is a test preparation guide that can be purchased at the bookstore.  Sylvan Learning (334-9449) also does test preparation.

What if I don’t pass the test?

If you fail a portion of the test, you must wait 60 days before retesting.  There is no limit to the number of times you can take this test.  You will not fail the course if you fail the PPST; however, you will fail if you do not take the PPST exam. The prerequisites for this Music Education Core I are PPST, EDUC 2020, EDUC 2030, all general education requirements, and 2.5 GPA.  You will not be permitted to enter the music education core until you have completed these requirements.   You should plan to complete EDUC 2020 & EDUC 2030 by the end of Summer, 2005 in order to be on track for a timely graduation.
