History and Purpose

The Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women was formed in 1972 by interim Chancellor, J. Victor Blackwell.

The purpose of the Commission shall be to serve as an advisory council to the Chancellor and other university administrators on issues that relate to women faculty, staff, and students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The Commission is to monitor the status of women on the UNO campus and to recommend ways of improving that status. The Commission comprised of volunteers from the faculty, staff, and students, serves more than 15,000 students and 1,200 faculty and staff.

In order to encourage the full participation of women in the University, steps must be taken to identify and eliminate the disadvantages that women face. The University of Nebraska at Omaha cannot afford to have its students, faculty or staff working at a disadvantage.

  • When it is more difficult for women to participate everyone is harmed.
  • When women are paid less than men for the same work, they are at a disadvantage.
  • When women lose employment because they are pregnant, they are at a disadvantage.
  • When women do not have access to safe and affordable child care, they are at a disadvantage.
  • When women do not receive full credit for their contributions, they are at a disadvantage.
  • When women are victims of sexual harassment, they are at a disadvantage.
  • When women's ideas are not taken seriously, they are at a disadvantage.

Past activities of the Chancellor's Commission include:

  • Supporting the establishment of day-care facilities for students, faculty, and staff
  • Identifying pay inequities between male and female faculty Initiating and implementing a program to combat sexual harassment on campus
  • Presenting an annual award to recognize outstanding achievement in promoting the status of women on the UNO campus
  • Encouraging the development of a family leave policy
  • Recognizing organizations in the Omaha community for promoting the status of women
  • Recognizing a faculty or staff on the UNO campus that champions women's issues
  • Promoting the Women's Resource Center
  • Conducting surveys to Students, Faculty and Staff on issues related to gender
  • Yearly scholarship support for a UNO student.
  • Collaboration with Women's Studies Program
  • Arranging activities and programs that bring awareness of women's issues to the campus community.
  • Supporting initiatives on campus that bring balance to individuals in the UNO learning community
  • Voter Registration during 2004 and 2006 campaigns
  • Support for the Annual Women's Walk for Athletes
  • April 2007 - Sexual Assault Awareness Month YWCA presentation on Date Rape and Sexual Assault and The Clothesline Project. Similar to the AIDS quilt, The Clothesline Project puts a human face on the statistics of violence against women.
