At 1306 a work order had been issued at 1319 Ben called me to let me know they were digging up a manhole closest to the library so they could clear the line from the outside, at 1401 Ben called me to let me know that the blockage was cleared.

All in all 65 minutes from first report to completion.

Dennis, who was answering phones during this time, also contacted Environmental Services and had them onsite ASAP to deal with cleanup on the first floor.

I’d like to take a few minutes to let you know how pleased the Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) has been with two special lunches recently catered by Troy Romine. The lunches are part of three individual interview days for DCS Academic Advisor candidates visiting UNO. Two interview days were held last week and our final interview day (with lunch) is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, November 20.

We greatly appreciate Troy’s accommodations of our request to hold the lunches in CPACS 208. Thanks to Troy, the table set up was lovely with the linen tablecloths, autumn table decorations, and the white dinnerware. Personally, I was in awe of the beautiful transformation of our 208 conference room! The meals, beverages, and desserts were delicious, resulting in the perfect CPACS dining experience.

Thank you, Troy, for everything you’ve done to make these lunches an impressive highlight of the DCS Academic Advisor interview process/experience. It is a pleasure to work with you!

Bravo! - UNO Security

Hi Paul,

Just wanted to say a big thank you for the support you and your staff provided to the Collaborating Center in having a security guard at the polling place all day yesterday. As you know, nothing of a security nature happened, but I know the collaborating center staff and the election personnel appreciated having security personnel there all day.

I especially appreciate the help that Officer Hancock offered last night. I came later in the evening to lock up, and he was so pleasant and patient as we waited for the election personnel to finish their business and leave the space. He helped me lock and secure the alarm, and made me feel very safe in a dark building and parking lot.

I did not get a chance to thank the officer who came earlier in the day, but my appreciation extends to him as well.

Yesterday I was with Herb Sklenar of Birmingham, Alabama, a 1952 alumnus and generous scholarship donor supporting the UNO College of Business Administration. He indicated he had recently been in touch with Mike Schmidt, Manager of the UNO Bookstore. Herb was trying to get a copy of UNO’s History book from 1908-1983. Mike was very helpful and responsive to Herb—getting the book mailed to Herb in short order. Herb mentioned this to me yesterday and was very appreciative.

Bravo! - DSC Custodial Staff

Since 1998, Aim for the Stars Science and Math Camps has used the Durham Science building as our home base. Each year, we have tried mightily to cause as little work as possible for the facilities staff assigned to Durham Science Center. This summer was extraordinary, because nearly every week there were over 200 children attending camp. Because of the excessive heat, we spent more time eating lunch in the halls and in the rooms.

I do not know what the summer custodial workload is in other buildings on campus, but I do know that the custodial staff members working in Durham deserve a raise or at a minimum a round of praise for dealing with the conditions created by having nearly 1800 children running around for the summer!

BRAVO and Thank You to Larry Morgan and Wayne Miller, Facilities Management Division for their efforts in researching, designing and coordinating the installation of energy efficient lights and infrastructure in the East Parking Garage. For years the lower level of the East Garage has been considered an unattractive option to those needing to park on the east or central part of the Dodge Campus. The lighting project that is complete in the lower level and progressing to the mid-level has made the parking structure look bright, welcoming and safe.

A side benefit is that the new lights will provide greater illumination with significantly less utility cost. The project expects an ROI in just 4-5 years. Many who use this facility have commented on this tremendous improvement.

Bravo Larry and Wayne and all those associated to help make this project an important improvement to parking facilities at UNO.

A “world of thanks” – quite literally – to Mollie Anderson on behalf of all the international students she hosted at her home this past weekend! Nearly 40 students from around the world spent a wonderful afternoon and evening on the lake with home-cooked food, boat rides, a scavenger hunt, bonfire, s’mores, and fireworks. It doesn't get much better than that! It was the perfect way to celebrate the end of the academic year and the kick-off of summer. It was also the perfect way to introduce these students to the “good life” we enjoy in Nebraska and in the United States.

Tomorrow’s leaders in politics, business, education and the military are being educated in the US today. Their perception of our values, our families, and our culture will have long-term impact on our world. Mollie’s generosity and hospitality represent the very best of Nebraska and UNO. I was invited to have breakfast with you [Bill Conley] and other staff members earlier this month. You challenged us to notice the good that folks at UNO are doing.

I wanted to let you know that while many people have been helpful to me as I transitioned into a very different position last year, Rosemary Conway in Accounting Services has been particularly patient, kind, and helpful to me the last few weeks with a variety of tasks.

She has helped me get an award check processed very quickly after I started paperwork far too late and she helped get a vendor direct bill set up so students wouldn't have to shoulder the burden of paying out of pocket, to name two recent examples.

Accounting often gets a negative image because of the rules and regulations they are tasked to enforce, but Rosemary and the other staff have been incredibly helpful to me and have made my work at UNO easier.

Today we have a VIP from AFROTC HQ in the Building performing an annual visit. I mentioned this to John and Meung in the middle of March and asked them to give the area a little extra attention just before Lt Col Herndon’s visit. I did not remind anyone of the custodial staff after that initial request, but they came through for us by making sure the area looked great for our Guest.

First impressions often set the tone for the entire visit. Their Exceptional Customer Service helped us look great!

We welcomed 21 community judges, 149 student presenters, 68 faculty advisors, and dozens of proud parents, friends, and UNO community members to the 2nd floor of the MBSC. I am so grateful for the scheduling assistance you provided to me in the days and weeks preceding the Fair. Our set-up seemed somewhat complicated (5 rooms, all within the same area, but all with different A/V, furniture, catering, and availability). I appreciate your good nature and patience related to understanding these varied needs and making sure all details were considered. As the Fair activities began (including set up on the evening before), I received the same wonderful customer service from the MBSC staff members. All were accommodating, helpful, and cheerful. You all made my job so much easier!

I want to personally thank you and your staff for assisting in getting the Center St Campus Indoor Facility repaired and operational in such a quick and timely manner. When you consider everything in the indoor facility had to be disassembled and removed and the dome taken down on Monday, and it was repaired on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then on Wednesday morning the dome was ready to be inflated and by 5:00pm it was up with all the lights installed, the batting cage and goals reassembled and ready for use was truly amazing. A big thank you goes out to Mike Grube, Andrew Buker and Seth Korber for their assistance with bringing Mail Services back on line. We updated our metering program to reflect the new postal rates implemented January 22 but our software provider failed to provide adequate information prior to the update. Through these gentleman's efforts we were able to break through the confusion and bring our server back on line. Thank you again for your quick and appropriate response to our needs.

Many thanks to the UNO employees who keep our parking lots, sidewalks and steps clear of snow and ice. On a recent cold, snowy day, I walked from Elmwood Park to the Arts and Sciences Building. I could tell the difference the moment I set foot on UNO property. The sidewalk was scraped clean of snow and was sanded. I could walk with confidence -- no fear of slipping on ice. I recently needed a doorway widened to comply with ADA regulations at the Welcome Center. Because of the age of the building and it's existing construction, modifying the doorway was especially difficult. Larry Adler did a beautiful job and you'd never notice that it had been modified if you weren't aware that it had been.

Bravo! - John Rossing

John told me today about his tulip project. He and his students planted thousands of tulips on campus recently. Next spring, when the snow is slowly fading away, the fruits of their labors will make us all glad. After his pre-planned flower beds were planted, he gave each volunteer a handful of bulbs and told them to surprise him. I thought you might like to know what a truly creative resource John is for our campus. My world is a better place because of John.

Bravo! - Dave Daniels

Dave Daniels helped out with the UNO table at the Corporate Cycling Challenge this year. Our team was larger than in previous years, and I believe experienced a cohesiveness in large part because of Dave's role. While Dave didn't cycle himself in the challenge, he 'manned' the UNO tent. He handed out encouraging words, as well as water, water bottles, bags, and snacks. He gave us all a great experience by dedicating his Sunday to be somewhere he didn't have to be.

Recently I have had some renters use the space in Strauss PAC and they were very pleased with Edna. They sent me an email and it stated: "We also wanted to give a HUGE thank you to Edna McAllister. Please let her boss know that was incredibly warm and welcoming and a great steward of the university. We asked her to talk with our girls briefly about taking care of the facilities, and she was SO positive and welcoming to them, as well as making sure they knew what was expected of them. She was great to work with!"

As I was walking to the garage, and looking west I was struck by how gorgeous the campus is this summer. Despite the construction and projects which can't be helped, the pep bowl and other grassy areas were freshly mowed, the flowers blooming, no litter, just simply beautiful. I just wanted to let you know that your wonderful catering staff (John Leed and others) served hors d'ouvres at my daughter's wedding. and they were fantastic (both the food and the staff)! The wedding was at Soaring Wings winery so they had to bring absolutely everything and cope without a real kitchen. Everyone who attended raved about the food! I would like to recognize Dave [Meradith], UNO Chief Engineer – Facilities Management & Planning, for the successful accomplishment he has achieved which is something that so few will ever attempt and even fewer will successfully complete. This Friday May 6, 2011, Dave will receive his Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering. What separates Dave from others is that he started this program over 8 years ago while working full-time at UNO. I think that we can all agree that the task of balancing college classes while working full-time with a family is no easy task.

Bravo! PKI Custodial Staff

Hi Randy [Jensen] and Edward Johnson],

I just wanted to let you both know that I really appreciate the efforts of the PKI custodial staff to keep my research lab clean. I recently asked Joe to clean the floor in the lab in PKI 213, as it had gotten dirty over time. I believe that he, Priscilla and Andy ended up cleaning the floor and the rest of the lab and did an outstanding job! I just asked them to clean the floor, but they went above and beyond and cleaned the rest of the lab space, including taking out old boxes, and dusting and cleaning the counters. Betty is also a wonderful custodian and also makes every effort to keep the lab clean.

Any time I ask any of them for assistance, they are always very willing to help out. They are very appreciated!

Laron took the initiative to find out whom he should notify. Bravo! - Wayne Miller, Don Smith, Facilities Maintenance and Utilities, John Folker, and Campus Security

On Saturday December 11, 2010 Wayne, Don and John responded to a fire in Allwine Hall at 930 PM. The fire turned out to be one of the building transformers for Allwine Hall. Through their quick response the appropriate staff and contacts were made and local contractors were contacted to restore temporary power to the Allwine by 2300 AM Sunday morning. All this occurred with wind chills below -10 degrees outside. Thanks to all UNO staff and Electric Company of Omaha for their quick response to a potential disastrous situation.

Bravo! - Helen Burton

I am writing this e-mail because I believe that the housekeeper who takes care of EAB 202 [Helen Burton] should be commended for her honesty. I came to work early on Tuesday, January 4, and found on my desk a $5 bill with a note from Helen saying she had found it on the floor next to my desk. Five dollars is quite a bit, what with today's economy, and I believe that Helen should be commended for her honesty. I had assumed that I had already spent it and was pleasantly surprised to have it returned to me.

Helen is also an excellent housekeeper, by the way. She is very diligent and thorough in her duties.

Bravo to David Ross, Facilities/Landscaping for the FANTASTIC job of clearing the icy sidewalks this morning. This is the first time in years that I have not had to walk that treacherous sidewalk from the parking garage to the Eppley Administration Building praying that I would not fall. After a number if icy weather issues last year where a number of people fell multiple times, I am sure that I am not the only one singing the praises of Mr. Ross' diligence.

The MBSC staff have been extraordinary to work with in preparation and implementation of the 3 Days of Service...we had a fantastic turnout with over 700 volunteers over the 3 days! The check in here on campus went extraordinarily well...we used the newly renovated fireplace area and it accommodated the groups of 100+ at a time easily...and smoothly...Thanks for all the support...

I want to again thank you and your staff for all the hard work of everyone in the preparation of the HPER Building for our Dedication. Their hard work was very noticeable and appreciated. The building looked fantastic.

I also want acknowledge Claudio [Benvenuti] for his prompt response and hard work on Sat. Oct. 9th in the flooding of the racquetball ball court 3. Claudio worked very hard and quickly to clean up the mess from the sprinkler which limited the damage to the court. His willingness to help was commendable and I was surprised how quickly he was able to clean the mess up. Please let him know how thankful I am for his hard work.

Since University Village's renovations were not completed until around 9:00pm yesterday I was unable to determine if any bedrooms/units were missing furniture. This morning I discovered a unit missing two complete beds; residents are scheduled to start moving in tomorrow at 8:00am. Although Nebraska Furniture Mart had them in stock, I had no way to retrieve them. When I called Mike Brush he agreed to bring the beds to me, and delivered them in well under an hour.

I am extremely grateful for his speed and willingness to help us get ready for our new residents. Thank you also for allowing me to utilize Mike for issues like these.

Deb was checking on the night crews at 4 a.m. this morning when she saw an individual near the satellite equipment north of HPER. He saw her watching him so he sauntered off but did not go to a construction area, which contract workers would do. She later observed him back in the area, climbing over a wall and walking toward the security fence – he had a large pair of cable cutters in his hand.

She approached him and asked if she could help him find anything. He said he was there to apply for a job. Upon query, he said that he had located the foreman and discussed a job. He saw her looking at the cutters and volunteered that he had found them “over there” in the grass. He began to move toward a pickup truck to leave. She also noticed the padlock on the security fence was missing.

Deb moved behind the pickup and recorded the number. Before she could call Security, they pulled up at HPER on other business and she directed them to the suspicious individual. A chase ensued and Russ Schneider was able to stop the suspect vehicle.

He was arrested. They found three sizes of wire cutters in the stolen pickup, as well as various kits and devices to break into buildings and locks. He tested positive for meth. He was stealing copper and had returned after he thought she’d left the area so he could retrieve the copper.

Looks like Deb & Russ scored a big one for the University and also took a full-time thief off the streets of Omaha.

As you likely are aware, the past couple of nights have provided tremendous water challenges on campus.

First, on Tuesday evening, the storm that dumped about 3" of rain in about 45 minutes was too much for Sapp Fieldhouse and the parapet wall which is currently under repair. The main floor in Sapp Fieldhouse, as well as locker rooms in the basement sustained considerable water and related damage. FMP crews and Hawkins Construction employees worked all night and most of Wednesday getting the water up and drying out the area.

Last evening, a water pipe broke in the basement of Roskens Hall. The water flooded at great volume, such that it spread to a large portion of the first floor and basement, carrying considerable mud with it. An asbestos abatement contractor (working on the fifth floor) discovered the leak when he took the elevator to the first floor. When the doors opened, water rushed into the elevator. He immediately notified Campus Security who responded within 3 minutes. Teams, again, worked all night and continue today in working to get up the mud and water.

The response to both of these situations by UNO personnel was truly impressive. Both cases demonstrated the tremendous dedication and care that people at UNO have for this institution!

Many people deserve our thanks and appreciation....including those in Facilities Management & Planning, Campus Security as well as the College of Business and Athletics...and perhaps others I have not mentioned. They all have my sincere and heartfelt thanks for their outstanding efforts! Click here for update.

I wanted to send a note thanking your officers for their response to yesterday's medical emergency in the Political Department involving Dr. Bacon. The first officer arrived within a minute of my call at a dead run, prepared to use the AED and take any other action necessary. Several other officers arrived immediately thereafter to offer assistance, including quickly leading the engine and med unit to our building and office.

We [Facilities] were having problems with the Plant's Vehicle #10 and sent it to the dealership for a quote on repairs.. The rear view mirrors and doors were broken and/or not operating properly. The quote ended up being over $1,500. Mike Brush asked Lowell if Dan [McDermott] could take a look at the truck, which Lowell agreed to. Dan spent time finding replacement parts and doing the repairs himself for a couple of hundred dollars total.

Just wanted to send a thank you for Dan's time and energy in saving the University considerable money.

I was very glad to dine with you last night. I am writing to compliment your staff on the fine meal we were served.
Please note that I am a food snob. More appropriately, I am a FOOD SNOB! I am renowned for my complaints about all institutional food. I have not actually consumed a banquet meal in 20 years. That string came to an end last night. I know how difficult it is to hit a consistent medium rare and hold the temp for 100 people. I appreciated the fact that the vegetables were both al dente and warm through. The dessert was very pleasant (although I suppose a warm chocolate dessert is sort of cheating....who complains about chocolate?). In short, it was a meal I would gladly have paid for.

I've written you in the past about how pleased I am to be able to talk to a real person instead of getting trapped in a phone tree, when I have a problem or need information. It happened again today. I would like to give special praise to Stella in the Human Resources Department. I had to call her twice this morning to ask for help in filling out an application for my brother-in-law, who will apply for a custodian job opening. Both times, she went beyond what I expected. It is so refreshing to be able to speak to a real person through and solve a problem.

This past weekend UNO commissioned a discrete communications system to handle UNO’s telephone and voice mail requirements. These new components will permit UNO to support upcoming physical expansions, enhance system survivability and control costs.

The transition took approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. From early indications, it went extremely smoothly. A key element of this success is attributable to the generous and professional support provided by UNMC’s Information Technology System under Yvette Holly. Terry O’Callahan, Frank Plummer and Diane Brown were key members of the project team. They provided insights and guidance regarding both integration and operation of the new technologies. They facilitated acquisition of critical data effecting the new system configuration. Diane Brown deserves special recognition for her endurance at 2AM Sunday morning.

Please extend UNO’s, our telecom team’s, and my personal appreciation to Yvette Holly and her staff for the exceptional support provided. It was a pleasure working with them.

Dick and his staff in telecommunications have done so much to help us on the NeSIS project that it is time I said thank you. More importantly, I wanted you to know we have asked much of him, and given him short notice, usually complicated set up, and he (and Andy in particular) have always been there when we needed help.

Starting today, and through the end of January, we are notifying almost 28,000 students to claim their credentials for mavlink by going through TrueYou. Dick and Andy - again on short notice - helped us get a call center set up to help with overflow from the Helpdesk. It was not as easy as it may appear, and we are thankful for the work they did.

We appreciate all of the coordination and cooperation that you gave us on Saturday for the football field preparation. Our administration, as well as Coach Behrns, all commented more than once on how well the field turned out prior to the game.

On Sunday, we had the same issue for the soccer game. We expected the snow to melt a little more than it did, however, it was almost completely covered. Jim did a great job of getting the field ready to play. On both days, the players and fans showed up to a game that had a great looking field to play on.

I believe I mentioned to you something the other day that I wanted to follow-up and repeat....that is a big thank you and Bravo! to you and your team for all of the work done this summer in preparing for the students to return next week.

The construction projects were tight on time and provided a challenge, but you and your team worked through the hurdles and got them completed. The MBSC looks great....the new food court is exciting and I'm anxious to watch this go live next week. The Maverick Room, I believe, may soon become a very popular place for students to gather. The Ballroom, NE room and Aksarben rooms all look terrific. The initial comments from students, staff and faculty are quite positive.

Just a couple of things. First, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you and seeing you 'at work' yesterday. Your reputation preceded you - I have heard many great things about you, but I was very impressed, first-hand, at your management style and ability to phrase things so well. I also very much appreciate the new attitude that it's NOT okay to just show up at work in a bad mood because you can't retire yet, collect your paycheck and go home. UNO is a just fabulous place to work, but there are a few people who, unfortunately, forget why we're here and that our students are our customers, so we DO need to have a customer service-oriented environment. First impressions on a student or parent, or so often in our college, someone from the business community, is crucial - sometimes people forget that.

I wanted to say thanks to all the people who helped with the You Look MAVelous! Scavenger Hunt.

Some volunteered at tables, some helped with needed supplies, some helped coordinate the set-up, some prepared food, some did health checks, some provided the Gator ( I love the Gator! But Mollie and Joe will never ride with me again!), and other various tasks. Thanks to the Team Captains for encouraging your team members to participate.

Special thanks to the staffs in Campus Rec., Human Resources, and Student Health Services for all your help. And to Mollie and Esther for planning and coordinating the event! The exact numbers will probably come later (Esther will provide those), but I thought we had a great turn-out.

Thanks for all you do to help promote wellness at UNO! This was a great team effort! (If I missed someone who needs to be thanked, please pass this along to him or her).

Good afternoon Bill, I just thought you should know of quality work done by our support team within Business & Finance. This morning, due to the postal increases, we had to update our G2 program to meet the needs of our University customer base and that of postal service requirements. Our application was interrupted by an error that occurred due to a software issue that our supplier failed to notify us about.

Upon discovering the error, I immediately contacted Deb Ekeler and the company Claritus, which holds our contract for the equipment, so hopefully we could get up and running. Deb was in our office within 10 minutes and on the phone to the sales department, she got immediate results enabling us to finish the update and resume our normal sales activity. With her efforts we got the job accomplished. I thought she deserved the "Pat on the back."

Wally shared with me the news that the UNO Child Care Center has again received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Congratulations!

Wally also informed me that the UNO Child Care Center was the first center accredited in the state of Nebraska.
In looking at the NAEYC website, I found the following:
NAEYC Accreditation represents the mark of quality in early childhood education. To achieve NAEYC Accreditation, early childhood education programs volunteer to be measured against the NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards. Today, over 8,000 NAEYC accredited early childhood education programs serve families around the nation.

The continuation of this accreditation is important and an ongoing reflection of the great work by you and your team. I really enjoyed the opportunity to visit the center last week and to get a firsthand look at the CCC. Thanks for having me.

Over the noon hour, we inducted Senator Chuck Hagel into Omicron Delta Kappa, national leadership honorary. About fifty people were present at the luncheon, including former UN President and UNO Chancellor Dr. Ronald Roskens, Chancellor Christensen, Vice Chancellor Hynes, several member of the community, retired and current faculty, staff and students.

Sharon Larsen and John Leed did an excellent job with this event. I had not been as clear as I should have been on a couple of issues but Sharon, John and the rest of the staff did a great job of making the luncheon a great success and, more importantly, making UNO shine.

I wanted to share the compliment below with you all right away. As I've told you before, I've heard something similar from virtually every external reviewer that we've brought in over the past four years. When I tell them that the team meals will all be on campus, they are skeptical. But at the end of the review, they thank me for the wonderful meals. The reviewers are faculty from universities throughout the country. The academic program reviews are important for the unit under review and the university. The meals are when the teams process the information they've heard, develop questions, and begin drafting the review. It means a great deal that these meals are pleasant experiences.

I truly appreciate the wonderful service and food you provide for all of groups I work with but especially the academic program review teams.

Bravo! - Campus Security

We had a call from an out-of-town mom of a residence hall female student. The student was ill over the weekend. After getting our answering machine, the student called security. The mom called us back to let us know how nice and helpful the UNO security officer was. The officer made a good impression for the mom. We do not know the officer's name but the event happened on Saturday, January 1/25/09 around 10:30 AM. It was nice to have someone let us know they appreciate the services [we offer].

Bravo! - Officer Cody Haner and Sergeant Ian Winfield

Two campus security officers responded to an accident near the old parking garage near Arts and Science building last night (1/12/2009) at about 5:45PM. One officer's name was Winfield and the other officer was a tall man, with a beard and red hair. I do not remember the second officer's name [Officer Cody Haner]. I wanted to thank them for handling the situation very well. They comforted me, kept the angry taxi driver away from me, cleared the scene, and helped us exchange information. I was very satisfied with their performance and professionalism.

I attemptted to email you in September of this year with no success. I would like to show my appreciation to your officers and staff for their hospitality. I would like to directly show appreciation to Officer Jerry Anderson for his fine service on September 24, 2008. I went into the Eppley Admin Building for two minutes and return to my vehicle not starting. Ofcr. Anderson was patrolling the Milo Bail parking lot and came over to give jumpstart. He was concern that I would be stranded with my mother and not be able to get her home. Later that week Ofcr. Anderson asked if I was able to get my mother home safely and get my vehicle serviced.

I must say UNO still is family staff orientated, and I have always cherished this unity. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your department hospitality.

Thanks for the very quick response this morning to help us out with operation of the "cherry picker" (and also getting the 8 foot ladder). Without your help, I'm not sure that we would have been able to get all the lighting set for the opening of the art show this evening. Facilities gets all the complaints when things don't go the way they should or as fast as desired, but you also need to need to hear the positive when your response exceeds expectation.
