2008 NE-INBRE Scholars for Bioinformatics Announced

Congratulations to all our new NE-INBRE Scholars. Caleb Schmid, Julia Warnke, and Ximeng Zheng were chosen as the IS&T Scholars. They will be choosing their summer research campuses soon and will begin their work this summer. Watch for their areas of research on the NE-INBRE Scholars Program page of this website.

J. Craig Venter Institute Presented on TIGR CMR, Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Instructors from the J. Craig Venter Institute, JCVI, formerly TIGR, presented on the Comprehensive Microbial Resource. "Comprehensive Microbial Resource (CMR) is a free tool that allows researchers to access all of the publicly available bacterial genome sequences completed to date." The focus will be on the CMR with a basic overview of prokaryotic annotation methodology. For more information on CMR, please visit the JCVI website at www.jcvi.org/cms/research/projects/cmr.

There was a lecture in the morning with hands-on computer laboratory exercises in the afternoon.

NCBI Mini-Courses held Thursday and Friday, October 25th and 26th, 2007

An instructor from NCBI came once again to UNO on October 25th and 26 th to conduct four mini-courses. The four mini-courses held were:

  • Identification of Disease Genes
  • Unmasking Genes in the Human Genome
  • Entrez Gene QuickStart
  • MapViewer QuickStart
Details of the content of each course may be found at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/minicourses/index.html.

This was the first time that NCBI had held these courses outside of the Bethesda, MD campus. There were be two courses held each day, one in the morning running from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and one in the afternoon running from 1:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. All courses will be held at the Peter Kiewit Institute at 67th and Pacific Streets and computer lab classroom, hands-on setting. These were hands-on, problem driven courses. As before, there was no fee for the courses.
