FAQ for the Yellow Bike Share Program

Q: What is the UNO Yellow Bike Share Program?

A: It makes bike available on campus to enable people to quickly go from one part of campus (Dodge or Pacifc locations). It is intended to promote physical activity while protecting the environment.

Q: What does it cost to ride a bike?

A: It is free.

Q: Who can use the bikes?

A: Any UNO student or employee.

Q: How many bikes are there?

A: The number ranges from five to ten bikes depending on how many are in the shop at any given time.

Q: Where can I find a bike?

A: Look for available bikes at any UNO bike rack. The yellow bikes have a card with information attached to the bottom of the seat and to the handelbars.

Q: Can the bikes be used for travel between Dodge and Pacific locations?

A: Yes, as long as the bikes are left at a UNO bike rack.

Q: Should I try to adjust the bicycle seat before I ride?

A: Since these bikes are for short commutes, the bike seats should not be changed unless they half a quick release adjustments as many do.

Q: What are the best routes to take between Dodge and Pacific Streets?

A: It us best to ride on the bike trails through Elmwood Park when traveling between locations. On the Dodge Street location it is best to take the perimeter roads with the exception of the perimeter road on the hill south of the HPER Building (because of the construction). When campus sidewalks are congested, walk your bike.

Q: Can the yellow bikes be used to go to off campus destinations?

A: No, although you may ride on city trails and streets to get to UNO destinations which is any UNO property with a bike rack. For off campus trips you should use the bike library at the Outdoor Venture Center or a B-cycle.

Q: What are the rules.

A: Check out the information under the safety, helmets, rules and disclaimer buttons on this web site.

Q: Do I have to wear a helmet?

A: Helmets are strongly recommended. Pack a helmet in your back pack or attach it to the outside of your backpack, so you will always have it with you when you ride or check out a free helmet at the Outdoor Venture Center.

Q: Can I carry passengers on the bike?

A: No

Q: When are the bikes available?

A: If you see a bike, you can use it on a first come, first served basis. Do not, however, ride after dark.

Q: What do I do if a bike has a flat tire or some mechanical problem?

A: Call 554-2670 or 402-690-9134 and report the problem and the location of the bike.

Q: Where did the bikes come from?

A: They were donated by Boys Town and many individuals. We purposefully did not use new bikes because we wanted to reuse and recycle.

Q: Who maintains the bikes?

A: The UNO Bike Share Program is maintained by volunteers and funding from UNO Student Government in cooperation with Trek Bicycle Store of Omaha.

Q: How can I help?

A: You can volunteer to fix bikes, fix tires, transport broken bikes to volunteer mechanics, promote the program, maintain Facebook, Twitter or blog accounts.

Q: Who should I contact if I have suggestions or comments?

A: Contact Dr. David E. Corbin at 402-690-9134 or dcorbin@unomaha.edu
