The fall 2006 AID meetings are suspended for the remainder of the semester. We will try to start events up again in the Spring and will post events on the mailing list and website if some should come up.

Globally conscious young leaders are invited to apply for a Young Global Leaders Summit entitled “Oil Dependence and Climate Change: We Do Have a Choice” being held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha on August 12th. The summit will bring together student leaders from across the U.S. for a day of workshops, speakers, and discussions on how young people can take positive action to reduce U.S. oil dependence and to preserve our global environment. Students will hear from top experts and then be immersed in breakout sessions where they will have the chance to weigh in with their own view on how the U.S. can ensure a secure energy future.
At the Summit, students will learn strategies for talking about global environmental issues with Americans and techniques for organizing town hall meetings in their communities as part of a national series on oil dependence and climate change. Students will also have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with a diverse group of young leaders, equipping them with the knowledge, support and structure to implement these ideas in their neck of the woods. Confirmed speakers at the summit include:
• Bill Moore, Publisher and Editor of EV World , expert on issues of vehicle technology and sustainable transportation, and former writer for Discover, Popular Science, and Air & Space Smithsonian
• Robert Kuzelka, Associate Professor in the School of Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and former staff member at the NU Water Center, Nebraska State Office of Planning and Programming and the City of Tulsa Model Cities Agency
* John Hansen, President of the Nebraska Farmers Union and the Secretary of the National Farmers Union since 2002.
* Dave Sands Executive Director of the Nebraska Land Trust since 2003
The event's schedule is roughly:
8:30am – 9:15am: Registration and Breakfast
9:30am – 10:15am: Introduction to AID
10:30am – 11:30am: Keynote Address: Rep. John Cavanaugh
11:45am – 12:30pm: Small Group Discussions over Lunch
12:45pm – 1:30pm: AID Workshop: Talking Global Issues with Americans
1:30pm – 2:45pm: Panel Discussion
3:00pm – 3:45pm: Small Group Discussions
4:00pm – 5:00pm: AID Workshop: How to Organize a Town Hall that Educates and Activates Your Community
5:00pm – 5:30pm: Closing Session
Thanks to the generous support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Open Society Institute, Ford Foundation and Hewlett Foundation, the weekend summit is free for selected participants, including lodging and food. Travel to the conference is at the participant’s expense, but Americans for Informed Democracy will do its best to set up car pools for participants.

As you know, AID is a non-profit, non-partisan student organization which seeks to promote International cooperation and global awareness. AID has accomplished many great events here at UNO, including: Town hall discussions, videoconferences, and just recently the FREE screening of a powerful documentary. We have a few students who will be graduating, or other various events, and we're in need of new AID members to fill the slots! AID-Omaha is pleased to announce a new AID member! The position of Senior Political Analyst has been filled by John Greise. John will be responsible for publishing opinion pieces in the school and local paper in concert with AID events. AID-Omaha announces our next initiative: The Future of the US and UN Relations.
We begin this initiative with a videoconference on February 28th from 11:00 to 12:30pm in the Eppley Admin. Building, Room 202.
This videoconference will highlight many important issues, such as: What is the future between the US and the UN? How can the UN be reformed to better meet the security, development, and environmental challenges of the twenty-first century? and Should the US participate in the ICC?
Please join us for this free event and listen to the key-note speaker, Dr. Phil Meeks from Creighton University. Other Participants in the videoconference will be: Honduras, Germany, El Salvador, Uruguay, and other US sites.
