Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Finalists

Charles Hurt will visit UNO and be interviewed for the position of senior vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs starting on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Several public events have been planned for his two-day campus visit. All faculty, staff, students and members of the public are encouraged to attend and take part in any or all of the these four meetings. The first event, an open forum, has been set for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) Dodge Rooms. Three other events are being hosted by university groups and have focus topics. The day and times, sponsoring unit, topics and locations are:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 22, 3:45 p.m. -- 'Shared Governance at UNO' hosted by the AAUP Executive Committee and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee in the MBSC Gallery Room;
  • Wednesday, Jan. 23, 9:45 a.m. -- 'Civic Engagement and Service Learning' hosted by the Service Learning Academy and the Civic Participation AQIP Advisory Team, MBSC Council Room; and
  • Wednesday, Jan. 23, 10:45 a.m. -- 'The Importance of Faculty Development, Teaching, Research, and Assessment' hosted by the offices and committees for assessment, faculty development, graduate studies, and research, MBSC Gallery Room.

In addition to the four public events, Dr. Hurt will meet with a wide range of campus constituents, including faculty, staff and students. The two remaining senior vice chancellor candidates and their official UNO campus visit dates are being finalized, but will take place before the end of January.

Dr. Hurt served as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2006 and 2007. He also currently serves as a full professor in the universtiy’s computer Science and Information Systems Department in the College of Business and Economics. Prior to starting at Wisconsin, he had been the dean of the College of Arts and Science at West Chester University from 2002 until 2006. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Terry Hynes will visit the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and be interviewed for the position of senior vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs starting on Thursday, Jan. 24.

Several public events have been planned for her two-day campus visit. All faculty, staff, students and members of the public are encouraged to attend and take part in any or all of the these four meetings. In addition to the four public events, Dr. Hynes will meet with a wide range of campus constituents, including faculty, staff and students. A final candidate, Suzanne Ortega, dean of the University of Washington Graduate School and vice provost, will visit UNO on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 30 and 31.

Dr. Hynes currently serves as dean emerita and as a professor in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. She also is the public outreach director for the university’ Documentary Institute. She came to Florida as dean in 1994 and served in that role until 2006. In 2006 and 2007 she also was Florida’s assistant vice president for University Relations. Prior to her time at the University of Florida, she worked at the California State University-Fullerton.

She is a graduate of Regis College. She earned both her master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Gordon McQuere will visit UNO and be interviewed for the position of senior vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs starting on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Several public events have been planned for his two-day campus visit. In addition to the four public events, Dr. McQuere will meet with a wide range of campus constituents, including faculty, staff and students.

Dr. McQuere came to Washburn University in 2002 to be the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to that, he had been at Eastern Michigan University from 1994 through 2002 where he had served as an interim associate dean, head of the university’s music department and chair of the Academic Department Administrators Association. He is a graduate of the University of Tulsa and earned both his master’s in composition and doctorate in music from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Ortega has served as dean of the University of Washington Graduate School and vice provost since 2005. From 2000 to 2005, she worked as vice provost for Advanced Studies and as dean of the Graduate School at the University-Columbia.

She received an associate’s degree from Brevard Junior College and a bachelor’s degree from Austin Peay State University. She earned both her master’s degree and doctorate from Vanderbilt University.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) invites applications and nominations for the position of Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. One of the four campuses of the University of Nebraska System, UNO is located in the heart of Nebraska's largest metropolitan area. The position of Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs is expected to provide strong intellectual leadership for excellent learning, teaching, scholarship, creative work, and public service and is responsible for the administration of all academic and student service policies and programs. The successful candidate must work effectively with the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, the Deans, the faculty, students, staff, and community to formulate and implement academic plans and strategies.

Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor are five Associate Vice Chancellors (Research, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Technology and the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs), and the Deans of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business Administration; Education; Communication, Fine Arts and Media; Information Science and Technology, Public Affairs and Community Service, International Studies, the Graduate College, and the Library.
