Daniel A. Siedell comes to the Department of Art and Art History after over ten years as curator of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he worked closely with a number of contemporary artists, such as Charley Friedman, Santiago Cal, Chris Ware, Mike Cloud, Nic Nicosia, Conrad Bakker, Anne Lindberg, Nancy Friedemann, among many others. He is particularly interested in the history and development of art criticism and the relationship between religion, spirituality and contemporary art. He is the author of numerous essays on art criticism, contemporary art, and museum pedagogy. He edited Weldon Kees and the Arts at Mid-Century (University of Nebraska Press, 2004). The work of contemporary artist Enrique Martínez Celaya is a primary research interest. Siedell has an M.A. from SUNY-Stony Brook and a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa. He also writes art criticism for artUs and works as an independent curator. His book on religion and contemporary art is due out in the fall of 2008. Siedell will teach Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory, and Criticism.
