UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING (UCAT)

Contact: Center for Faculty Development or UCAT

Governance:

Purpose: Be responsible for fostering instructional development. Committee shall recommend allocation of monies to full-time UNO faculty for the improvement of the instructional capabilities. Such grants shall include, but not be limited to, worthy projects in instructional methods, instructional research, pedagogical applications of new technologies, development of instructional materials, and professional development in accordance with criteria established by the committee. Committee shall advise the vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and shall report on its activities to the chancellor.

Membership: Seven members, of which six shall be faculty (selected by the faculty Senate as follows: two from Arts and Sciences, who will rotate among the divisions; one each from the Colleges of Business, Education, Fine Arts, and Public Affairs and Community Services), and one student (selected by the student senate). The Director of Faculty Development and the Learning Resource Specialist shall serve ex-officio, without vote. The committee shall select its own chairperson. (NOTE: Learning Center eliminated on UNO campus due to budget cuts 09/2002 = only one ex-officio member.)

BE IT RESOLVED, that the following two names go forward as three-year appointments from 07/01/07 through 06/30/10, to the University Committee for the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT):

• Melanie Bloom, A&S (C), (to replace Teresa Lamsam)
• Matthew Harden, CFAM, (to replace Melissa Berke).

BE IT RESOLVED, that the following three names go forward as three-year appointments from 08/01/06 through 07/31/09, to the University Committee for the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT):

• Kerry Ward, IS&T, (to replace Ann Fruhling).

BE IT RESOLVED, that the following names go forward as three-year appointments (July 1, 1997 through June 30, 2000) to the University Committee on the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT):

Betty Hickman, IS&T
Roger Sindt, BA.

WHEREAS, the primary mission of the University of Nebraska at Omaha is teaching, and

WHEREAS, teaching circles would allow participating faculty members to have an opportunity to discuss, share, and improve teaching strategies, and

WHEREAS, UCAT is proposing a program through which forty faculty members could each receive a $300 stipend for their participation in teaching circles for the sum of $12,000, and

WHEREAS, a program to improve teaching at UNO should not be at the expense of other successful UCAT programs; therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, that the UNO faculty senate supports UCAT in their development of a program of teaching circles, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the UNO faculty senate urges the administration to increase the budget for UCAT by $12,000 in 1998-99 and in future academic fiscal years for the purpose of funding a program of teaching circles, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the UNO faculty senate urges the administration to continue to look for ways to expand financial support of continued improvement of teaching at UNO.

BE IT RESOLVED, that the following names go forward as three-year appointments from July 1, 1998, through June 30, 2001, to the University Committee on the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT) to replace C. Jo Manning (A&S) and Sharon Sobel (FA):

Angela Valle, College of Arts and Sciences
Larry Bradshaw, College of Fine Arts.

BE IT RESOLVED, that the following name go forward to complete Betty Hickman's term as the College of Information Science and Technology representative on the University Committee on the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT) from August 19, 1998, through June 30, 2000. Professor Hickman is transferring from the College of Information Science and Technology back to the College of Arts and Sciences:
